Craig Ferguson's opinion about Twilight
I agree with Craig about this new version of what nowadays people call a "vampire" because it goes against what Bram Stoker depicted as a horror character since 1897. I really think that the novel "Dracula" is a masterpiece, which deals not only with religious and sexual matters but also faces the problems of modernity and the introduction of science in a society that is constantly changing. I can't believe how a book like Twilight can actually take such a character and turn it into a modern version of Beverly Hills 90210, it is totally degrading. Vampires are suppose to be characters that take blood out of people, being blood a constant motif in the novel depicting ancestry trough "blood lines", a need to be kept alive or to feed upon as the "blood of Christ" in a christian communion, an exchange between vampire and human in a "human to vampire conversion" figuring sexual intercourse. Is no joke what craftfully Stoker implied using blood as a motif for a writer such as Stephenie Meyer to dare to manipulate such elements and create a totally different character. By creating "vegetarian" vampires Meyer destroys the essence of a vampire, she takes away the element of woman sexual liberation and creates a "gay friend" as Craig says instead. One of the main themes that is contained in the novel "Dracula" is the expression of female sexuality. During the Victorian era a woman had only two options: she was either a virgin (a model of purity and innocence) or else she was a wife and mother. If she was neither of these, she was considered a whore, and thus of no consequence to society. Mina Harker defies this vision as being intelligent, open minded, and she too has a curiosity for what Dracula represents, still she is kept naive, pure and chaste while Lucy after being converted into a vampire loses all these virtues turning into a "libertin" thus antagonizing what a "real Victorian woman" concept implies. Also Lucy as a vampire lures men into sin and death symbolizing Adam and Eve's story in the Bible.
I think that taking a masterpiece such "Dracula" and tearing its main elements into pieces really attempts against human literature thus writers should really respect what a "classic" represents. Twilight vampires are no real vampires and new generations shouldn't be vexed by these new ideas that have been incepted into them. In order to form real criteria new generations should read classic literature in order to understand society around them and to recognize real human expression. Diluting vampires like in Twilight only gives actual society what the cold hearted and empty society is being raised as and not what actual society really needs. Female sexual liberation is not yet finished and thus new generations should know about it, girls don't need to be fed upon novels that talk about "vegetarian" vampire boyfriends who fall in love, they need to know what lust, intercourse and sexual expression means in order to really value chastity, pureness of heart and a healthy sexuality. It's not the repression that brings moral but the understanding of one's dignity and feelings what ignites one's souls. Instead of sparkling vampires who protects humans and ABs shaped lycans, society needs to start remembering what vampires and lycans mean so the motifs, themes and symbols are not wasted into generations. Love itself is beautiful and a real author doesn't need to "complicate" things by creating fake vampires and lycans as a barrier for true love. In my opinion, Twilight is giving candies to children so they forget what real food tastes like or in the saddest of cases so the never learn what real food tastes like.
